Drum Lampshade making
In this three-hour course I will teach you how to make contemporary drum lampshades to a high professional standard.
You will learn how to:
•Position your fabric on your lampshade, thinking about pattern placement and repeats
•Use different fabrics, papers and finishing
•Adhere your fabric onto the laminate panel used to make the shade
•Hand roll the covered panel on to the lampshade rings, expertly tucking the fabric under the rings to make the perfect shade
•Adhere trims and edgings should you wish to
This course costs £75 for a one-to-one 3 hour session, or £40 each for two or more people. The class will either take place in my workshop near Reigate or I can come to you (there are travel costs though, please ask for detail).
Fabrics – you will need to bring half a meter of your own fabric - an average weight cotton or cotton mix.
You will go home with a wonderful shade and the ability to make many more, either for fun or on a professional footing.
Traditional hand sewn lampshade making
This all day workshop you will learn how to make traditional hand sewn lampshades to a high professional level, including:
•Binding your lampshade frame with lampshade tape
•Positioning your fabric (on the bias) on to your frame, pinning into place to create the perfect cover
•Learn how to make soft ‘balloon linings’ for your lampshade if required, or a demo for future use
•Hand sew your fabric cover and inner lining onto the frame
•Make hand sewn trims and bindings to finish and decorate your lampshade
This 6 hours course (10am-4pm) for a one-to-one session costs £140, or £80 each for two or more people. In addition, the frame and tape and haberdashery cost an additional £10 per person.
Please note that there is much hand sewing and a lot to learn in making the traditional hand sewn shades and you will most likely need to finish the making in your own time. If you wish to have a two-day course please ask for detail.
You will need to bring: half a meter of your own fabric - you will be using the fabric on the bias (45 degree angle) for stretch; matching colour thread; a packed lunch. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available at regular intervals!
Both these workshops will enable you to go on to make lots more lovely lampshddes either fo fun or for offering the service to clients - perfect for soft furnishers. You do not need to have had any previous experience but for the traditional lampshades, a love of sewing is required!
